History and Philosophy of the Programme

Crop Production is a three to five (3-5) year programme depending on the entry qualifications. It is designed to provide and enhance opportunities in the acquisition of comprehensive agricultural expertise and usable farming and renewable natural resources management skills to serve as a resosurce base for expansion of crop production knowledge. It equally aims at developing management capabilities and needed skills to operate as proficient practical agriculturists and resource managers, with particular emphasis on the production of agricultural crops to contribute meaningfully to the immediate environment, the state and the entire nation at large.

Objectives of the Programme

The Department of Crop Production aims at training highly skilled graduates, well versed in the principles and practices of crop farming and capable of:

• Setting up and managing crop farms on their own or on behalf of corporate bodies.

• Solving practical problem in all aspects of crop production and

• Demonstrating scientific cropping practices to farmers

Admission requirements

Undergraduate students are admitted into the Department with the intention to major in Crop Production after they must have satisfied the requirements of the University, College of Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Agr4icultural Production and Renewable Resources. For any candidate to be considered for admission into the 100 level of the Department, he/she must satisfy the following requirements:

1. Must have performed satisfactorily (at a level to be determined by the University) at the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Examination.

2. Must have obtained at least 5 credit at WASCE/GCE O/L SSCE/NECO at not more than two sittings in subjects that include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science.

3. And any other screening/appropriate test for admission organized by the University.

For any candidate to be considered for admission into the 200 level of any of the degree programme, he/she must satisfy one of the following requirements:

1. Must have passed at least 2 subjects relevant to Agriculture at HSC/GCE/A/L. In addition, he/she must have obtained at least 5 credits at WASCE/GCE/O/LSSCE/NECO at not more than two sittings in subjects that include English Language, Mathematics and Chemistry.

2. Must possess OND at least credit level pass in Agriculture, Animal Health, soil Conservation, Horticulture, Forestry, Wildlife Management, Fisheries and Agricultural Engineering. In addition, he/she must have obtained at least 5 credits at WASCE/GCE/O/LSSCE/NECO at not more than two sittings in subjects that include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science.

3. Candidates with HND can however be admitted into the 200 level and later be exempted from the internship year programme at the appropriate time in the course of their study. Student admitted through this mode must possess HND with at least credit level pass in Agriculture, Animal Health, Crop Production, Crop Protection, Soil Conservation, Agricultural Management and Extension, Horticulture, Forestry, Wildlife Management, Fisheries and Agricultural Engineering. In addition, he/she must have obtained at least 5 credits at WASCE/GCE/O/LSSCE/NECO at not more than two sittings in subjects that include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science.
