The Department of Economics offers courses leading to the B.Sc degree in Economics which may be awarded with Honors or as a pass degree. The objective of the B.Sc. (Econs) degree programme is to prepare students for careers in government, business the professions, teaching and research.

To achieve this objective, are the courses are designed of the methodology of economic analysis. The courses offered and the depth at which they are taught are such that the graduate of the Department would have acquired the competence to handle problems in both the public and the private sectors which are amenable to the analytical method and tools of Economics.

Apart from providing the student with a sound theoretical knowledge, the programme is designed to offer the student fairly high degree of knowledge in the special areas of the discipline. This should not only enable the graduate of the Department to handle public and common management problems but also provide him with a sound undergraduate background for postgraduate studies.

Students admitted into the programme may specialize in any of the following areas; Industrial Economics; Development Economics; Quantitative Economics of Natural Resources; International Economics; Public Finance and Monetary Economics.


(i) Candidates must obtain at least five (5) credits in W.A.S.C. or the General Certificate in Education (GCE O’LEVEL) conducted by W.A.E.C. or N.E.C.O including five or six credits at not more than two sittings in subjects which shall include English Language and Mathematics and at least two social science or commercial subjects.

(ii) Mathematics and any other two social science or commercial subjects at the J.M.E. .


(i) In addition to the general entry requirements specified in A

(ii) above, Candidates must possess G.C.E. “A” Level or H.S.C. passes in at least two subjects in examination conducted by recognizes bodies like W.A.E.C., NECO, Cambridge and London Universities and others that may be specified from time to time.
Or (ii) National Diploma in Accounting Business, Finance, Statistics at least upper credit from approved polytechnics and colleges of Technology

(iii) Diplomates of Olabisi Onabanjo University in Accounting, Business, Finance, Statistics at least a 3.00 on the lower credit grade. Or (iv) Candidates with upper credit in the Degree Foundation programme Examination, in exceptional cases, candidates with at least a 3.00 grade point average on the lower credit grade in the Degree Foundation may be considered.
