HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Communication programme started as a unit of the Department of English. Students were admitted into the programme through the Centre for Sandwich Programmes (CESAP) of the University for a Part-time Programme. The programme became a full-fledged/regular . one in August 2002 when the University Senate formally established the Department of Mass Communication. The part-time programme seeks to benefit mature students who work on week days and, therefore, could not enroll in the regular/full time programme.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Studies was designed to equip students who intend to make a career in Communication with professional and academic training in line with the unfolding realities of an ICT oriented media practice. Towards this end, the programme focuses on five areas of Communication viz: Applied Communication and Information Management, Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising, Book Publishing and Information Science, and Broadcasting and Cinematography.

With a crop of experienced professionals in the various fields of communication, the programme prepares students for competence, proficiency and self-reliance in the media profession through a carefully integrated curriculum enriched with practical assignments.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department of Mass Communication understands that today’s increasingly complex and globalised world can be better appreciated for more rapid and sustainable development by people with excellent communication skill. This essentially informs the proposal of a training programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Studies. The programme is designed to produce men and women who are professionally well equipped in the areas of communication. It is structured to adequately meet the needs of those who intend to take a career in Communication. Training in this field becomes crucial when it is recognised that communication is the lifeblood of any healthy society. The programme is also intended to produce well nurtured conscientious professionals.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME

The primary objective of the programme is to provide the basic academic and professional training required to understand and analyze issues and problems relating to the overall concept and management of communication as a multi-disciplinary field of study.
In addition, beneficiaries of the programme will receive adequate training in the following areas of communication

1. Applied Communication and Information Management

2. Journalism

3. Public Relations and Advertising

4. Book Publishing and

5. Broadcasting and Cinematography.

Students will not only be properly equipped with the basic skills and technical know-how of communication, but also properly trained to handle state-of-the-art communication technologies of the 21st century Students will, on graduation, be eligible for registration with professional bodies like the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Press Council, Nigerian institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Students seeking admission into the Department to pursue a B.Sc. – Degree in Communication Studies must satisfy the following entry requirements:

1. Four-Year Degree Programme (VME)
An applicant under this category must obtain a minimum of five credits including English Language and Mathematics, and any other three’ from the following: Literature in English, Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa or Arabic/

Degree in View
The programme leads to a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass communication.
Admission Requirements.
In addition to the requirements set out by the Faculty of Arts, a student wishing to take Mass Communication as a major course for B.A. (Mass Communication) degree (Single Honour) must also sat¬isfy the following conditions.

1. Four-Year Degree Programme.

Applicant under this category must satisfy the following conditions:
a. He/She must in addition to sitting for the JAMB/UME en¬trance examination sit for the university’s entrance test. The univer¬sity determines what minimum total score for admission (cut off mark) should be for each academic session.
b. He/She must have obtained a minimum of five credits, including English Language, one other Arts subject and any other subjects at not more than two sittings in the WASC/GCE/NECO/SSCE examinations.

2. Direct Entry -Three Year Degree programme.

To qualify for the direct entry programme into the Department of Mass Communication for a degree programme, candidate must posses, in addition to (1b) above, at least two papers taken and passed at not more than two sittings in the GCE/AL/NCE (with English Lan¬guage combination) or Diploma in Mass Communication,, Public Relations, N1PR, APCON, BEEC in Advertising & PR, NIJ, etc of the University or of any institution recognized by the Olabisi Onabanjo University. Such certificates must have been passed at least at the Lower Credit level.
(c) Requirements For The Award of B.A. Degree in Mass Communication

1. The Programme of study shall be provided leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department to be noted as B.A. (Mass Communication) which may be awarded with honours or as a pass degree.

2. The minimum number of course units to be passed for the award of a degree shall be 147..In addition the students must satisfy the faculty and departmental requirements as well as the University regulations guiding general studies (GNS).

3. Each student must register for a minimum of 18 units and a maximum of 24 units per semester, which shall include all the compulsory and required courses.
4. Each student must pass at least 30 units at 100 and 200 Revels out of which 21 units must be from Mass Communication, 6 Units from the student’s second Department and 3 units from the third Department 30 units each also be obtained at 300 and 400 levels
