The establishment of the Department of Performing Arts was approved in the year 2003. Before then, the initiative for it had been nurtured in the English Department which had begun to accommodate a Performing Arts Unit in the year 2000. For three sessions before the full-scale emergence of the Performing Arts, Diploma Certificates in Performing Arts had been awarded by Olabisi Onabanjo University through the Centre for Sandwich Programme. The department kicked-off its first session in 2003/2004 with roughly fifty students on both degree and diploma levels – and teaching staff strength of eight.

The department offers courses leading to B.A. (Performing Arts) as a major, and Diploma Certificate in Performing Arts.

The Performing Arts Programme of the Faculty of Arts is envisioned to provide cultural and creative research and performance opportunities. It’s B.A. and Diploma Programmes, like preceding theatre/dramatic arts programmes in Nigerian Universities, are educationally structured to bring students and their tutors together in an uncommon environment of teamwork and scholarship which will ensure the fulfillment of an objective and relevant practical, theoretical and critical agenda.

The Cultural Performance Troupe as an artistic, experimental and a technical laboratory for lecturers and students, connects, through its performance activities, the University to its immediate and remote environments, and explores the diverse cultures of the nation with re-interpretative skills.

The B.A. Programme is designed to develop in the student an aptitude for textual analysis and a capacity to relate the artistic and entertainment forms of a society to the entire gamut of its ever dynamic system-religious, scientific, technological, historical, philosophical, sociological and political.

The programme additionally, pays equal attention to the orientation of the student in the direction of an integral identification of the visual and technical aspects and patterns of the Performing Arts and to its written forms. This will enable the student to interpret performance in space and explore its multi-faceted dimensions in a functionally enriching manner for any audience.

The principal objective of the programme in Performing Arts is to avail the students the opportunity of acquiring both professional and basic academic training in the Arts of Drama, Theatre and the Electronic Media. At the end of the course, the student is expected to demonstrate an acceptable degree of specialization, Acting, Directing, Theatre Management, Technical Theatre, Playwriting, Radio and Television Projection, Costume, Masks and Body Make-up.

Finally, the Performing Arts Programme equips the students with a profound orientation in critical theories and philosophies, which the tripartite arts of drama, dance and music have generated, and which have guided them through history.

This knowledge will develop in them the ability to formulate new criteria advance new paradigms and break the barriers of conservative restrictions with a special relevance to the evolution of society and the immediate need of man.
